Nintendo has just blocked flashards on the DSi yet again with the release of firmware update 1.4.1 today. However, it does not seem like all flashcards have been affected.

Nintendo’s system menu update page says the new firmware provides “behind-the-scenes improvements”, but as expected that is really just PR speak for “no more homebrew for you”. This is the first incremental update for the DSi in over a year, yet it is not believed there are any new features for the DSi outside of flashcards being blocked.

Flashcards confirmed to have been blocked :

Acekard 2i

Supercard DSTwo

M3i Zero

iPlayer

iEDGE

DSTTi

R4i Gold

R4i

If you own any flashcard, we recommend you to not instal this update. If you do install it, you may not be able to use your flashcard.

UPDATE :
Many manifacturer of flashcards have already released fixes which bypass this new protection.

Nintendo officially went on record today to announce their new DSi model to hit stores soon, the DSi LL. This new model is bigger in every way to it’s counterpart, the DSi. For starters, the screen is bigger and the device weights a whole 100 g more than it’s predecessor. Along with size, the DSi LL will also cost more than the other DS consoles. This one will release in Japan at 20,000 yen (or $220). While the name right now is DSi LL, I doubt it will remain that when it comes to the US. Basically, LL is what the Japanese call “XL.” So, an XL shirt in Japan would be LL while here it would be XL. Makes sense that when the DSi LL comes to American shores, it will be called the XL. Depends if the name sticks or not. Microsoft’s Project Natal wasn’t supposed to be the final name, but I bet they stick with it when it’s released due to the market saturation so far.

Nintendo of Europe confirmed that the larger DSi will arrive “in the first quarter of 2010″ with a new name: DSi XL. Like Japan, the update will also come with an unspecified price hike over the DSi.

Nintendo has just released DSi firmware 1.4 which adds Facebook photo uploads, a faster camera and blocks all current flashcards. We’d suggest if you value using flashcards with your DSi you don’t update.

Most flashcards have updatable bootloader that potentially could save them from being blocked if the flashcard makers find a suitable workaround. For now at least, DSi enhanced games don’t require a certain firmware in order to be run, so you should not update for the moment.

The update is confirmed to be live in Europe, Japan and Australia so far and will be available in Americas soon (most likely monday).

Determine your DSi’s firmware version.

The update is prompt if you connect to the DSi-shop or if you look for updates in “system settings” menu.

Nintendo’s DSi will be available in Canada april 5th. It can be pre-ordered at Futureshop for 199.99$(CAD). Two colors are available : Black and Blue.

The Nintendo DSi has a built-in camera with two sensors, 0.3Mpx each. A first installed on the outside and another installed inside the console. It also offers a larger screen than the DS Lite, 92 mm instead of 87.5 mm, may also be used as a digital audio player and allows storage of data through an SD card reader. Note that the GBA port has been removed.
